About the Item
A beautiful bamboo sculpture in a double-walled basket form by contemporary Japanese bamboo artist Kawano Shoko (born 1957-). The piece entitled "Birth" was made in 2002 and purchased from Tai Modern in 2010 (with a copy of original invoice). The voluminous basket features the signature style of the artist with a swelled body, and it was finely woven in a tight twill plaiting technique that follows the contour. The rim of the basket was constructed with bundled plaiting with delicate rattan ties. Two bended bamboo stalks were made into an irregular T-shape handle. The beauty of this piece is manifested by the interesting form the basket takes. Although the body is globular with expanded and rounded shoulders, it gradually morphs to a rectangular base with a tensioned arch. As a result, the appearance is unexpected with a surprisingly lightness contrasting its generous volume. This form is a signature of the artist's work in recent years, and it demands a high mastery of the technique. What is highly unusual of this piece is that the artist created an inner basket in a contrasting dark color. This body within body thus gives the title "Birth". The seamless transition demonstrated the superb techniques commanded by the artist with this particular medium. The twill plaiting was done in a meticulous precision. The meticulous execution requires an utmost desire to perfection. The basket is signed "Shoko" on the base. It comes with a wood tomobako with inscription "Birth Ikebana Basket" outside and Artist's signature and seal under the lid.
Kawano Shoko was born in 1957 on Kyushu Island and he studied under Morigami Jin in Oita. He won the Cotsen Bamboo Price in 2002.

Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Sculpture Honma Hideaki
By Honma Hideaki
Located in Atlanta, GA
A bamboo table top sculpture by Japanese bamboo artist Honma Hideaki (b. 1959) made in early 2000s. The basket form sculpture was a creative ikebana and could be used as such or simply as a okimono (decorative piece). The piece is of an unusual oval dish form with the wall irregularly outlined with bent bamboo, thousand-line construction form the upper part of the wall and the patterned twining was added in the lower part to give it a visual shift from airiness to solidity. A large piece of bamboo was selected as the base.
Signed "Hide" underneath. An American Midwest collection.

Large Contemporary Japanese Woven Bamboo Sculpture Mimura Chikuho
By Mimura Chikuho
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary hand-woven bamboo sculpture in an organic form by Japanese bamboo artist Mimura Chikuho (1973-). Named "Cloud on the Peak", the piece was made as one of his series in 2004. Entirely hand-woven in irregular plaiting, the artist challenged the traditional bamboo basket making and elevated it into modern abstract sculpture. The minimalist donut form resembles the hat-shaped cloud formed around the peak of the mountain (often seen on Fujisan in Japanese art). It displays a wonderful subtle undulation and irregularity in its organic shape, achieved by a mastery of the traditional technique. The irregular plaiting appears chaotic in its busy crossing patterns yet as a whole, the piece strangely quiet and introverted, demanding contemplation from the viewer. Signed "Chikuho" underneath in Kanji. The piece comes with its original storage paper box and a silk bag.
Provenance: Purchased from Tai Gallery/Textile Arts now (Tai Modern) in Santa Fe.
