About the Item

An exceptional & highly decorative pair of antique Chaozhou hand carved giltwood panels, both showing finely executed relief-carved & gilded vignettes, composed in a terraced format depicting scholarly figures standing beneath ‘moon gate’ structures, nobles on horseback and Manchurian swordsmen - all surrounded by pine boughs set against an intricate field of finely carved repeating geometric cell motifs. Both panels mounted within joined & red stained rustic wooden frames, exhibiting age related surface wear & losses. The carved panels remain in very good overall condition with only a few very minor losses to the carving and some areas of rubbing to the gilding. One frame measures 39.25" high x 16" wide, the other frame measures 38.25" high x 16" wide. (Chaozhou is a city located in the Eastern Guangdong province of China, well known for its highly skilled carvers who have been producing some of the finest traditional woodcarvings in China since the Tang Dynasty).
