Han Dynasty Jade and Gilt Bronze Pendant with Taotie Mask
About the Item
Sumptuously mounted carved jade pendant decorated with Taotie mask, with incised gilt bronze fitting, Han Dynasty (206 B.C. to 220 A.D.).
This piece, which has four holes in the gilt bronze mounting and would likely have been worn on the robe of an aristocrat or courtier, depicts a Taotie, or "monster mask," an artistic motif that had been widespread since the bronzes of the Shang Dynasty. The frontal animal-like mask has a prominent pair of eyes, encircled well-defined eye sockets that twirl off into a curling pair of eyebrows. The upturned nose has two small spiral nostrils and is flanked by rounded cheeks with tufts of fur at their edges, denoted by incised lines. The open mouth, while displaying fangs, is upturned at the edges, suggesting a grin. Two strongly carved horns frame the forehead and spiral in the opposite direction of the eyebrows, the horns dominating a pair of pointed ears shaped like teardrops.
Jade is not a “dead” stone, but a material which is alive, whose structure changes over time depending on how it is affected by environmental conditions. Jade interacts with and reacts to light, air, water, fire, and the acidity of the soil. One of the most common forms of alteration that can take place over a prolonged period of time is the “rust” effect, caused by the oxidation of the iron contained in the stone and contact with water, which may percolate inside the jade through natural fractures and fissures in the stone. This jade is a celadon green, with extensive russet speckling. The left side of the face and lower jaw has more pronounced oxidation, and is more orange-russet in color than green. The gilt bronze, while still lustrous, is also speckled with russet irons marks throughout.
A box lid of similar pattern, featuring a Taotie mask within a gilt bronze circle, is published in the book The Beginning of the World: Dragons, Phoenix and Other Chimera (Lienart 2020), and is pictured on page 11.
