For the finest garden- an exceptional and spiritual representation of the four Buddhas- a large scale 20 inch antique chozu’bachi hand carved stone water basin of rectangular form with square sides and a cylindrical pool . Meiji period 19th century.
Hand carved into its sides are four buddhas in meditative pose all depicted revealing comforting and sacred mudras.
A Chozu’bachi is an important ornamental vessel and feature frequently encountered in traditional Japanese gardens. Beyond decoration Its purpose serves as a serious vessel for ritual hand washing and mouth cleansing prior to engaging in tea ceremony or entering the sacred grounds of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
Chôzu'bachi embody a profound cultural significance, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and spiritual preparation in Japanese traditional Japanese gardens.
This type of basin is also known as 'Shihôbutsugata chozubachi 四方仏形手水(Four-Buddhas) and Chôzu'bachii is also known as a water reservoir for the hands. The four hand carved Buddhas are:
Yakushi 净瑠璃(Joruri - East), Shakyamuni 粎迦(Shaka - South), Amithaba 阿弥陀如来(Amida -
West) and Maitreya (Miroku - North).
