About the Item

Special find from our last Japanese Acquisition Here's a beautiful and unique way to accent your indoor or outdoor garden space with these treasures from Japan! This special pair (2) of handmade antique wooden rice measures -Itomasu- are crafted with sturdy base wooden slats and thick metal bands, from old Japan dating to the early 1900s. However these are no ordinary measures. They are in great condition and have been kept in very good condition signifying great use and valued utensils They can be a fine art display on their own or may be re- purposed in a million ways: dried flowers, newspapers, wood kindling, treasures storage and more. How would you use them? About Japan's wooden rice measuring buckets called an Itomasu Utilized as a specific unit of rice (one masu)- this bucket was a standard used by rice stores throughout Japan in the late Meiji and Taisho eras. The bucket held approximately 18 liters, about 40 lbs of rice. There is a stamp branded on the side with the rice store's name. Many additional smaller stamps can also sometimes be seen as official symbols given by government officials who have checked and approved this bucket to be an exact standard unit- one itomasu. After a century of careful use they still have a warm aged patina, ready for your use and another 100 years. You'll love them. Sculpted double handles complete their authentic look. They are a perfect choice for your indoor or outdoor garden spaces. Dimensions: 12.5 inches high Lifetime guarantee of authenticity.
