Japanese antique stone god/[Daikokuten]/Stone Buddhas from the Edo period
About the Item
Do you know what Daikokuten is?
This god in Japan is an old god who has existed since the end of the Muromachi period (16th century) as one of the seven gods who bestow happiness.
He carries a large bag on his back, holds a mallet, and wears a hood.
The base under his feet is a rice sack.
This is Daikokuten made of stone.
The era is probably around the mid to late Edo period.
It is not large, but its face has a rich smile and seems to bring happiness.
It is thought that this was not displayed outside, but was carefully displayed inside the building.
When a house was built, a Shinto altar was set up, and it was a custom to display a god such as Daikokuten.
As a result, it has become black like this due to the smoke from the hearth and candles.
And it is rare to see one made of stone, as most are made of wood.
It is unclear at this time whether the stone was particularly meaningful to the homeowner, or whether the sculptor was skilled at stone carving.
Part of the rice sack on the right foot is missing, but the cut surfaces and edges are worn, and it may have been worn down by regularly washing it with a scrubbing brush.
It shows how much it was cherished.
Other than that, it is in good condition.
A highly recommended item.
