Japanese Found Wood Scholar’s Object

About the Item

A dramatic and beautifully timeworn Japanese Wood Sculpture in vaguely anthropomorphic form balanced on five points and fashioned from a particularly dense and heavy wood. A wonderfully contemplative piece that reveals many interesting facets when gazed upon. The Sculpture, while standing very well on its own, is attended by an irregular wood slab in contrasting wood again with great weight and having three drilled holes. Dimensions: Sculpture on base measures 23.5” high by 12.25” wide by 7.5” deep. Condition: Please see detail photos. The Sculpture in all original and natural condition, the base with drill holes, old adhesive residue, stable age checking and scratches mentioned for accuracy as the presentation is mesmerizing and quintessentially Japanese.

Located in Sammu-shi, Chiba
This is a stone mined in Japan. Not only in China but also in Japan from ancient times, rocks in the mountains have been shaved and stones for viewing have been quarried. Such stones for appreciation are collectively called "suiseki". Suiseki means "water" and "stone". The name comes from the fact that I enjoyed pouring water on the stones and changing the color of the stones. And this item is also Suiseki, but it is for viewing without splashing water. It is made with the image of a mountain view. The flow of the river...
