Japanese Old Clay Doll / Mingei

About the Item

An old Japanese clay doll. This is probably a "Hirota Doll" made in Yamagata Prefecture in the Tohoku region. Until around the 1950s, Japan's economy was not as prosperous as it is today. It was difficult for an ordinary household to have a complete display of Hina dolls, and only a very limited number of households could afford to buy them. It seems that ordinary people would celebrate by displaying clay dolls, tile dolls, and paper mache dolls. At that time, clay dolls were sold by visiting each household. Each household would purchase them and display clay dolls for girls on the Girls' Festival and Kintaro and Momotaro dolls for boys on the Boys' Festival. Sometimes they would also display dolls such as a married couple doll (Takasago) and Daikoku-sama to celebrate auspicious days. (Abridged excerpt from the old Abe family documents) This is a work born from a simple folk culture. At that time, it was the most familiar art for the people, and it was cherished and has been preserved to this day. What's interesting about this piece is that it depicts an ordinary woman of the time, rather than someone of high rank or special standing. It's also a valuable artwork that gives you a taste of the atmosphere of the time. We highly recommend it as part of your collection. *There are no major scratches, but there is discoloration, small scratches, and dirt due to aging. Please be aware of this in advance. Thank you.
