Japanese Stone Carving Penis 1800s-1860s / Sculpture Wabisabi

About the Item

This item is a stone carved penis statue made in Japan. It is a very rare relic of folk belief made in the late Edo period (1800s-1860s). Since ancient times, there has been a culture in Japan of worshipping the phallic penis to pray for a good harvest, prosperity of offspring, and to ward off bad luck, and “phallic worship” is still practiced at shrines in various regions. It is thought that this stone statue also existed with a sacred meaning as a symbol of people's simple prayers and faith at that time. The texture of the stone and the simple, hand-carved expression of the statue give it a quiet strength that has passed through the ages. The spirit of “wabi-sabi” breathes in its appearance, and it blends in strangely even when placed in a modern space, giving it a unique presence. It is recommended for interior decoration as an art piece and as an object that conveys a part of the historical Japanese culture.
