KAZUYOSHI Japan Meiji 1890 Box In Lacquered And Gilt Wood Draped Seated Women

About the Item

A Meiji lacquered box in the shape of a seated lady made by Meigetsusai Kazuyoshi. This is a n extremely rare decorative box made in the shape of a fully dressed seated holding a temple's bell. The fantastic box was created in the imperial Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912), back in the 1890 by the artist Meigetsusai Kazuyoshi. It was masterfully crafted in carved wood and carefully decorated with red and black lacquer with gilt accents. The ropes of the lady are fully embellished with organic motifs, such; leaves, flowers and chrysanthemums flowers. Meiji Period This is an era of Japanese history that extended from October 23, 1868 to July 30, 1912.The Meiji era was the first half of the Empire of Japan, when the Japanese people moved from being an isolated feudal society at risk of colonization by Western powers to the new paradigm of a modern, industrialized nation state and emergent great power, influenced by Western scientific, technological, philosophical, political, legal, and aesthetic ideas. As a result of such wholesale adoption of radically different ideas, the changes to Japan were profound, and affected its social structure, internal politics, economy, military, and foreign relations. The period corresponded to the reign of Emperor Meiji. It was preceded by the Keiō era and was succeeded by the Taishō era, upon the accession of Emperor Taishō. Maybelle (Betty) Dore started collecting Japanese antiques in the postwar years, during the 1950s and 1960s, when interest in Japanese art was generally very low. For her business she ventured to Japan on her own to assemble netsuke and related works of art, including pipe cases and kogo (incense containers). Betty was also a founding member and the first Chairman of the International Netsuke Society, Northern California Chapter. Condition: The overall condition of this Meigetsusai Kazuyoshi box is excellent. Besides the little normal wear, there is no damage to the gold. All parts are secured in the settings.
