About the Item
A small Khmer bronze figure of the Hindu goddess Uma, Angkor Period, Style of Angkor Wat, circa 12th century, Cambodia.
This small Khmer bronze devotional figure depicts the Hindu goddess Uma, consort of Shiva, goddess of love and beauty. She is portrayed standing upright, arms outstretched holding discreet attributes.
She wears a long pleated sampot, turned down at the waist and secured by a belt. Her torso is bare, though she is bejeweled - a large necklace, anklets, armlets, bracelets and earrings. Her hair styled in a tall tiered chignon and secured by a diadem.
Uma's face is wonderfully detailed, with bold and well cast features typical of the Angkor Wat style. She looks outwards with an unwavering gaze. Her full lips turned up at the edges in a small smile.
The dark bronze with remnants of a light green patina to the surface, highlighting the pleats of Uma's sampot.
The figure standing on a square base, indicating she was most likely originally part of a larger grouping, possibly a Hindu triad.
Custom mounted on a large wood block.
The bronze of a dark brown green, with areas of lighter malachite green patina, and small areas of malachite blue.
A collection number written on the side.
