About the Item

A Meiji Period Japanese Hand-Carved Wood Turtle or Tortoise Sculpture. The entire object is carved from one solid large piece of hardwood. Hand-carved into the wood are three turtles or tortoises. The wood base is emblematic of a large boulder. The turtles are seen resting on the boulder bathing in the sun. The turtles are exceptionally life-like and vary not only in size but color as well. Their bodies are slightly darker than their heads and shells. Each shell is ridged and highly detailed and the skin is further carved with minute hand-carved details to showcase the coarse reptilian skin. The bodies are also further patinated with a dark stain showcasing the difference in body, head and shell. The bottom is signed by the artist with Japanese calligraphy. Japan, Circa: 1890

The centerpiece boasts a substantial and graceful curved base, complemented by a striking peaked and square-edged lip atop the vessel.
