About the Item

Ananda is portrayed in a typical fashion, as a youthful monk with a shaved head and dressed in simple robes. He stands upon a double lotus pedestal with hands clasped in front of him, eyes cast downwards, a serene expression upon his face. The figure has been cast in iron. A brown lacquer covers the surface, protecting the iron. Polychrome red and green lacquer highlight the hem of the robe, and the petals of the double lotus base. The face, hands and feet gilded. Ananda was a cousin of Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha, and one of his first disciples. He is often portrayed as an attendant figure to the Buddha, along with the older monk Kasyapa.
