About the Item

A decidedly charming small cast bronze figure of the Buddha, 18th century, Shan Tai Yai peoples, Burma (Myanmar). The small image of the Buddha is portrayed seated in full lotus position, both soles of the feet pointed upwards. His hands perform bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness his enlightenment. One hand is held in the lap in meditation, the other draped elegantly over his knee, fingers extend to touch the ground in front of him. Bhumisparsha mudra commemorates the moment the Buddha attains enlightenment. The Buddha's face displays a delightful, almost child-like countenance, with wide, almond shaped eyes under high arching brows, a broad nose, and plump mouth set in a smile. Ears with long, pendulous lobes that touch his shoulders frame his face. The Buddha's hair is arranged in the typical neat rows of tight curls. The pronounced ushnisha topped. by a tall lotus bud finial. The Buddha wears the standard monastic robes, with one shoulder and arm exposed. A cloth draped elegantly over his other shoulder. The hems with incised decoration. The Buddha sits upon a multi-tiered stylized double lotus pedestal, set on a larger trapezoidal platform. The pedestal decorated with incised designs. Remnants of gilding to the neck and base indicated the figure was fully gilt at one point. Areas of the bronze with red cuprite patina, indicating possible burial.
