About the Item

A small and charming fragmentary cast bronze Buddha head with traces of gilding and lacquer, Lan Na Kingdom, Chiang Saen style, 16th century, Thailand. The small head of the Buddha from the ancient kingdom of Lan Na, with typical Chiang Saen features, including the round, plump face and defined chin. The head with a lovely deep chocolate brown patina, with remnants of lacquer to the edges of the face and mouth, and traces of gilding around the eyes, ears, nose and hairline. Custom mounted on a black wooden stand. Height of head only: 2.5".

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor structural damages. Minor fading. Originally part of a larger sculpture, broken off at the neck. Some loss to the hair at the side back of the head. MIssing the lotus bud finial. The head filled with epoxy for mounting.

A wonderful Thai Rattanakosin Period lacquered and gilt cast bronze figure of the Buddha in royal attire, mid 19th century, Thailand. The lovely figure depicts the Buddha in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of calling the earth to witness. Seated in full lotus position, with one hand resting in meditation in his lap, the other extended over the knee to touch the ground, this gesture commemorates the moment the Buddha attains enlightenment. The Buddha is dressed in elaborate robes, cast with floral and foliate designs in high relief.
