About the Item

This extraordinarily life-like sculpture depicts orchids growing in the Asian forest. Thai wood carvers are very adept at carving teakwood into countless forms, including religious sculptures, elephants, fretwork panels, furniture and more. Teak is an ideal carving wood because while being very strong and dense it is also relatively soft, allowing the artist's full creativity to be expressed. Teak is also naturally resistant to insects and moisture, which assures that what is created will last. This specimen is an example of "forest carving" --depictions of trees and plants in highly realistic detail. Because of their delicacy, orchids are particularly hard to capture and considered a supreme test of an artist's ability. The carving is made in two stages. First, an old block of well-seasoned teak is obtained from a salvaged tree trunk. Next, the basic composition is chiseled out and most of the orchid stems and leaves are fashioned. Finally additional details are layered on to add depth. These elements are taken from different pieces of wood and meticulously added. The finished piece is a true work of art at the highest level of the craft. This carving was made in a small workshop in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Carved Teak Indian Temple Column
Located in Chicago, IL
This monumental Indian column once supported part of the entrance or courtyard cloister in a grand mansion. Originally part of a series, this individual column is all that remains. The piece comes in multiple stacked segments, distributing the weight of the original structure from its floral motif capital through its stone plinth. Only one is available. Origin: Rajasthan, India, 19th century. During the colonial period, Indian traders amassed huge fortunes and some of that wealth found its way into mansions and palaces. A hundred or more years later, many (if not most) of these structures are obsolete or the fortunes of their owners have dwindled. Many are in urban areas in which land is very valuable now and aggressively sought for multi-storey buildings. Old single-storey mansions are often disassembled piece-by piece and the parts sold on the international market. India is one of very few countries that have the labor supply to decommission old structures in this meticulous way. The column could be used in an architectural, load-bearing way or as a free-standing decoration...

A Multi-Tiered Carving of a Lotus Flower 46"
Located in Chicago, IL
The lotus flower has been a symbol of spiritual purity and enlightenment ever since the time of the Buddha. These wooden lotus flowers are meticulous reproductions of ceiling decorations found in Thai temples. In some temples, lotuses are painted directly on the ceiling. In other temples, they're elaborately carved, covered in gold and placed in the center of ceiling panels. Either way, their purpose is the same -to draw the eye of the worshiper toward heaven. . According to a Zen verse, “may we exist in muddy water with purity, like a lotus." The lotus grows out of the mud, rising upward to bloom in the sunlight, clean and perfect. These lotuses are hand-carved from wood and finished by artisans in Chiang Mai, Thailand, according to ancient designs. Shown here: a large multi-tiered lotus with an antique wood finish.
