A Teak Wood Sculpture of a Cambodian Apsara Goddess
About the Item
Newly carved from reclaimed teakwood, this bust takes the form of a Cambodian apsara. With origins in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, Apsaras are female spirits of the clouds and waters. They are also referred to as "celestial dancers" and often depicted in a sinuous, standing posture. Carved likenesses are found in temples throughout Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and other Theravada Buddhist countries. The teak used in this carving came from an old rice pounder. Abandoned in favor of modern rice-milling equipment, wooden pounders had thick walls and large pounding bowls and were made from an entire section of a teak tree. Carvers favor this seasoned teak because of its rare combination of strength and relative softness -it is the perfect wood for delicate subjects like faces and hands. Traditional carving still survives in the north of Thailand, in and around Chiang Mai. This Apsara has a very tall headdress featuring a cobra and Bayon-style face.
