A Thai Teak Wood Sculpture of a Blessing Angel

About the Item

Thai temples contained various kinds of carved figures including Buddhas, apostles and angels. This large blessing angel is based on sculptures that flanked altars or entrances. Thai Buddhists, like members of other faiths, believe that benign heavenly beings live in heaven and intercede in the affairs of people on earth. According to Thai belief, there are two principal types of angels: greeting angels and blessing angels. These sculptures are only found in temples and they are often richly gilded. This blessing angel holds a shell containing holy water and wears a heavenly costume decorated with pointed winglets and a draped skirt. It was carved in Chiang Mai, Thailand and intentionally weathered for an antique appearance.
