A Teak Wood Sculpture of a Cambodian Apsara Goddess

About the Item

Newly carved from reclaimed teak, this bust takes the form of an Apsara. With origins in both Hindu and Buddhist mythology, apsaras are female spirits of the clouds and waters. They are also referred to as "celestial dancers" and often depicted in a sinuous, standing posture. Carved likenesses are found in temples throughout Cambodia, Indonesia, Thailand and other Theravada Buddhist countries. The teak used in this carving was sourced from an old rice pounder. Abandoned in favor of modern rice-mills, wooden pounders were made from a cross-section of a tree, embedded in the ground with a large concave bowl facing up. Carvers favor teak because of its rare combination of strength and relative softness -it is perfect for carving delicate subjects, like faces and hands. Traditional carving survives in the north of Thailand, in and around Chiang Mai. This Apsara has a very tall headdress and a Bayon-style face.
