About the Item

A large and serene vintage sculpture of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, carved of teak wood, gilt, and embellished with glass "gems", circa 1970's, Burma. The sculpture depicts the Buddha seated in meditation, his legs crossed in the full lotus position, one hand resting in his lap, the other draped elegantly over the knee to touch the ground. This gesture is known as bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of "touching the Earth to witness". It symbolizes the moment of the Buddha's enlightenment. The Buddha looks out serenely through heavily lidded inlaid and painted bone eyes. He long earlobes hanging to touch his shoulders. His hair arranged in the typical tight curls. He is dressed in heavy monastic robes that feature elaborately designed hems with scrolling patterns in raised lacquer, and inset with mirrored glass "gems". Carved from several pieces of teak, joined, lacquered, and gilt painted. Overall an impressive statue with a nice and calming presence.

Burmese Carved Hardwood Crowned Buddha Seated in Western Pose, Mid 20th Century

Located in Austin, TX

A sublime Burmese carved, lacquered and gilt hardwood crowned Buddha seated in a "western pose", early to mid 20th century, Burma (Myanmar). The elegant and graceful Buddha is portrayed wearing an elaborate six pointed crown with two large "wings" to the side, and a simple robe wrapped around the body and draped over one shoulder. He is seated upon a high stepped throne, his feet resting upon a double lotus pedestal. The Buddha's face is serene. He stares out in the distance calmly, with eyes slightly downcast, and a slight smile on his face. His long, pendulous earlobes blend in with the wings of the elaborate crown upon his head. A lotus bud finial would originally have surmounted the head, but is now missing. He holds one hand in his lap, palm up in a meditative gesture. His other hand rests gently on his knee. This pose, with the Buddha seated upon a raised throne, with both legs planted on the floor, is often referred to as a "western pose".
