Shan Burmese Lacquered and Gilt Wood Buddha, Ava Period, 18th Century

About the Item

A rare and exquisite 18th century Ava period Shan Burmese figure of the Buddha. Carved from a single block of wood, lacquered and gilt, the immensely serene figure is portrayed seated upon a raised throne, hands in bhumisparsha mudra, the gesture of "calling the Earth to witness", commemorating the moment the historical Buddha Shakyamuni reached enlightenment. The Buddha's heart shaped face is rendered beautifully, with elegant downcast eyes and a pursed smile upon his lips. His long earlobes touch his shoulders, a reminder of his princely past. His hair is arranged in neat snail shell curls, rising up to his ushnisha. The front of his throne bears the remnants of an inscription. The back of the throne with a hollowed out section for consecration. The statue with a gorgeous patina. The gilding to the body somewhat rubbed, revealing the contrasting black lacquer below.
