About the Item

Lauritz Adolph Hjorth (Danish, 1834-1912) established a factory at Bornholm in 1859 which also established a ceramic dynasty that included Hans Hjorth, Gertrud Vasegaard and Lisbeth Munch-Petersen. The factory produced both production and wheel turned studio pieces. Hjorth responded to trends, effortlessly spanning movements as disparate as art deco and bio morphism, always honouring their commitment to technical excellence and impeccable quality. This delightful Danish mid-century hand-thrown small pin dish is beautifully produced and hand-painted with linear patterning and made at the Hjorth factory at Bornholm around 1960. The stoneware dish stands on a flat unglazed base and is of wide shallow form with a raised edge with the centre of the dish hand painted with a linear design in bold tones of blue, green, brown and yellow applied against a light grey glazed ground with a brown stained rim. The bowl has impressed factory marks to the base and is numbered 028. Provenance: from a choice collection of Scandinavian pottery amassed by a private gentleman who sadly now has insufficient space to display these fine pieces. Excellent condition with light wear associated with age and use.
