About the Item

This is a beautifully preserved example of a Regency period writing slope that also functions as a sewing box. The leather-bound table work box features a stepped square central panel with an engraved brass cartouche dating back to 1818. It is flanked by ribbed scroll supports and adorned with gilt metal mounts. The interior reveals a fitted compartment above a single sewing box tray, along with an additional tray drawer and a writing box drawer at the base that includes a fold-out writing slope. The piece rests on four raised gilt metal lion paw feet and includes ring handles. Inside, you will find its original leather and blue paper-lined compartments, along with personal curiosities left by previous owners. The cartouche bears a large ornate letter "K," which corresponds to the handwriting provenance underneath the base. The surname "Kirkpatrick" is inscribed along with the date 1818. This entire box showcases a stunning neoclassical sarcophagus shape that is characteristic of the period. It is a country house antique in great untouched, worn condition.
