French Walnut Burr Campaign Writing Slope Brass Inlay 19th C

About the Item

An exceptionally fine quality example of an early 19th century burr wood campaign writing slope, in beautifully grained burl, with polished brass inlaid, of French origin. Opening to reveal a fitted interior, complete with a pair of original glass brass capped ink bottles. Primarily veneered in fine burr wood of wonderful colour and figure, enhanced by cross bandings and inlays incorporating finely cut engraved brass. The top section with a cartouche inlay surrounded by foliage and elegant scrolls lifts up to reveal a lidded compartment and two glass inkwells. The sloped front then folds down to reveal an original light blue velvet writing slope with tooled edging. The top part of the writing slope lifts up to give extra storage space below. Key is working and usual cosmetic wear to the velvet slope.
