A Pair of 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Models of Bolognese Dogs, J.J. Kandler

About the Item

A Pair of Antique 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Model of Bolognese Dogs, After J. Kirchner. A finely modeled pair of 19th-century Meissen porcelain figures depicting Bolognese dogs, after the designs of Johann Joachim Kändler and later adapted by Johann Kirchner. Each dog is seated with a slightly animated posture, capturing the naturalistic movement and charm characteristic of Meissen's animal figures. Their coats are sculpted in high relief with individually rendered tufts of fur, glazed in white with patches of rich orangish/brown, accentuating the texture of the porcelain. The facial expressions are meticulously defined, with finely detailed eyes, black noses, and subtly incised whisker markings. The modeling of the fur, particularly around the ears, chest, and tail, demonstrates the high level of sculptural detail associated with Meissen’s 19th-century production. The dogs’ slightly asymmetrical poses create a dynamic composition, with one figure appearing more attentive while the other conveys a more relaxed stance. The coloration is skillfully executed, with carefully applied shading to enhance depth and definition, particularly in the longer strands of fur. Founded in the early 1700s, Meissen was the first European porcelain manufacturer to successfully produce hard-paste porcelain, marking the beginning of a new era in ceramic artistry. Under the guidance of artists like Kändler and Kirchner, the manufactory became renowned for its highly detailed figurines, often inspired by nature, mythology, and courtly life. The firm’s production techniques and mastery of porcelain sculpting set a benchmark for quality, influencing European porcelain manufacturers for centuries. Germany, Circa: 1880
