About the Item
A marble bust on typical waisted circular socle of Philanthropist Annie, Lady Jerningham
The bust was carved by R.W.Ingram around the last quarter of the 19th century and we believe the bust was a precursor to the Berwick-upon-Tweed’s ‘Monument to Lady Jerningham’ that was also designed by Walter Ingrams and Hubert Jerningham in 1903
Annie, Lady Jerningham (1850-1902), daughter of Edward Liddell of Benton Park, Newcastle. The statue was donated to the town by her second husband, Sir Hubert Jerningham, who was the local Member of Parliament from 1881 to 1885. Lady Jernignham’s health had begun to suffer in Trinidad and Tobago, where Hubert was colonial governor between 1897 and 1900. They returned to Britain at the turn of the century, but she never fully recovered and died on 9th October 1902, aged 52. Her death was marked locally by the closing of shops and the lowering of blinds. At the unveiling of the statue, the mayor of Berwick spoke of Lady Jerningham’s philanthropy: ‘Generous and kindly she ever was’.
The bust as you can see has spent a number of years in the elements and has acquired wonderful tone from lichens, Moss and Algae's. There is also some damage to Annies tiara and also what looks like a elderly repair to a small section on the back of her blouse.
Still a particularity fine bust of great proportions and likely to be the only other with the Berwick Monument of Annie in existence

William Theed the Younger 1804-91 Marble Bust of William Ewart Gladstone 1868
Located in Lowestoft, GB
A very finely carved marble bust of William Ewart Gladstone dated 1868 and signed W.Theed SC
William Theed was born in Staffordshire, his father, William Theed the elder being a sculptor and a craftsman at Wedgwood, known for his major work, Hercules and the Thracian Horses for one frontage of the Buckingham Palace complex. The younger Theed studied at the Royal Academy Schools, then worked for the sculptor E. H. Baily. Five years on, in 1826, he went to Rome, where he was to stay a total of 22 years, during that time working in the studios of Thorwaldson and John Gibson.
Returning to London in 1848, Theed enjoyed a good reputation, being a favoured sculptor of Queen Victoria, and was commissioned to produce many portrait statues, busts, and large monuments. He showed work in the 1851 Great Exhibition, and among other high points were a group for the Albert Memorial, and five standing figures on the Inland Revenue side of Somerset House, representing Manchester, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin.
Theed's statues may be seen in St Paul's (Henry Hallam), Manchester (Monument to Chetham in the Cathedral, Gladstone and Thomas Bright for the Town Hall, and James Watt in Piccadilly Gardens), Huddersfield (Robert Peel), Winchester (David Williams monument in the Cathedral), and Prince Albert statues for Grimsby, and in Australia in Macquairie Street, Sydney. He was also responsible for three of the portrait statues (Bacon, Locke, Adam Smith...

Bust of a Woman, almost certainly depicting Lady Layard (1870)
Carrara marble signed to the reverse "WARRINGTON WOOD SCULPT ROMA 1870"
Item # 405UGP17Q
A very finely carved marble bust that almost certainly depicts Lady Layard (British, 1843-1912) at 27 years of age. While the bust is not titled, John Warrington Wood had a relationship with the family, first sculpting Lady Mary Enid Evelyn Layard's husband and cousin Henry Austin Layard the year before in London in 1869. Wood exhibited that bust at the Royal Academy in 1870 and the same year Lady Layard would have sat down with him in Rome for the completion of this bust. Interestingly, Henry Layard decided he did not like the bust that was completed of him and eventually re-commissioned Wood to complete the bust again 12 years later in 1881, that example held in the permanent collection of The National Gallery in London. The same year, John Warrington Wood executed a second bust of Lady Layard that is held in the permanent collection of the British Museum of Art (acc. no. OA.10557). It is interesting to view the painting completed by Vicente Palmaroli y González...
