Large and Important Bronze Sculpture of Three Runners by A. Boucher - Siot

About

A fine and large French 19th century patinated bronze figural group “Au But"- to the goal, signed Alfred Boucher, Siot depicting three highly athletic male marathon runners in action. Cast and finished in a dark brown patina by the Siot foundry, 1890. There were smaller versions of this model that were made, but this particular bronze is one of the larger sizes cast. There is a lifesize version that the French government ordered to display in the Jardin du Luxembourg, Paris after Boucher successfully exhibited the model in the salon of 1886. A timeless sculpture that captures the mood and exhilaration of the Olympics and its athletes. There is a very small rubbed area on the base patina. statue, nude, men, man, athlete, body builder, decoration, figure, sport, speed, romantic, Belle Epoque, Late Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, work of art. Alfred Boucher (1850-1934). Boucher was a highly celebrated French late 19th century sculptor . In addition to his fame in France, he traveled to Rome and was the sculptor for Presidents and royalty. Some notable awards that Boucher won were the grand prix de Salon in 1881, the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1887 (France’s highest award), and the Grand Prix de sculpture de l'Exposition Universelle in 1900. As a mentor to Camille Claudel and a good friend of Auguste Rodin, Boucher was inadvertently instrumental in bringing the two together forming their stormy relationship. Boucher created the Paul Dubois-Alfred Boucher museum in Nogent-sur-Seine, France. Ref: Vol 111 Berman's encyclopedia of Bronze sculpture pg. 676. J. Piette, Alfred Boucher 1850-1934 "sculpteur- humaniste", ex. cat. Musée Paul Dubois -Alfred Boucher, Nogent-sur-Seine, 2000, no.39a, p.46.
