"Runner, " Large Rare Bronze of Nude Male Figure by Seifert, 1922

About the Item

Sculpted as European artists were moving from Beaux Arts realism to a more stylized modern approach to the figure, which we now call Art Deco, this large and rare bronze depicts a nude male runner in full stride. Here there is none of the drapery that was used earlier to bring modesty to the nude. Franz Seifert, the sculptor, was known for his figural pieces, both male and female, but he showed a special affinity for pieces that depicted workers and valiant male figures striving to accomplish great things. This piece has a lustrous, deep brown patina, and is signed and dated.

    By Franz Seifert
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
This highly rare bronze of a nude male athlete preparing to left a heavy kettlebell weight was sculpted by an Austrian artist, Franz Seifert, in 1922. A decade after this sculpture was cast, Seifert carved a marble portrait of Siegfried Marcus, inventor of the gasoline-powered car, for a monument in Vienna, which includes a nude male figure in bas relief racing forward on the upper edge of an automobile wheel. He also created a large sculpture grouping honoring Empress Elizabeth...
