Marcin Rusak, "Tephra Sculpture 006", 2022, Real Flowers, Zinc, in Stock
By Marcin Rusak
Located in WARSZAWA, 14
Drawing their name from the geological term indicating petrified fragments spat from volcanoes, the objects from the Tephra series are handcrafted using real, specially treated flowers mounted on sculptural forms made of steel wire and jute. Metallised using a thermo-coating technique that covers the dense textures in a paper-thin layer of molten metal, the structures preserve the eternal blossom in an almost Pompeiian effect of silhouettes covered in volcanic debris. The form of the Tephra Sculpture 006 comes from the study of plants’ anatomy, revealing an unexpected complexity of botanic forms that symbolise nature’s creativity. The sewing, bending and welding interlaced with the sublime fragility of flowers are blended, and in fact muted, by the rigidity of the industrial metallisation process. Cocooned by streams of liquified metal and finished by hand to achieve a polished or matte texture, the sculptures, reminiscent of monochrome bas-reliefs, establish a new field of exploration for Marcin Rusak Studio...

Rowland Ward Antique Diorama of Full Mount Leucistic Badger 'Meles Meles'
By Rowland Ward
Located in Leuven , BE
The badger is an omnivorous mammal with short legs for digging. He has an elongated, weasel-like head with small ears. This specimen is a European badger or Meles meles and is bigger than his American counterparts. The female badger in the showcase has a deviation in its pigmentation, which the light spots on its coat can notice. Such an animal with partial loss of pigmentation is called leucistic. Unlike people with albinism who have no pigmentation, leucistic badgers don't have red eyes but black ones. The taxidermist who handled the animal was James Rowland Ward (London, 1848-1912). He learned the trade from his father and opened his own company, "Rowland Ward Limited" in London. He mainly made a name for himself with his taxidermy birds and large animal trophies...
