About the Item

PAIR OF BAS-RELIEF MYTHOLOGICAL AMPHORA GARNITURES RAISED ON ROUGE MARBLE BASES Attributed to Ferdinand Levillain and Ferdinand Barbedienne unmarked executed circa 1880 Item # 604VBP23P A beautiful pair of garnitures from the fourth quarter of the 19th century, they are vasiform with amphora raised by tripart legs over a triangular Rosso Levanto marble base finished with a bronze rim with chamfered edge. The amphora were almost certainly designed by Ferdinand Levillain during his time as a designer for Maison Barbedienne, though they are not marked by either designer or founder. The bodies of the amphora feature the same mythological scenes on each, the front with a heroic figure raising his spear to heaven while dismounted from his winged horse while on the back a helmeted figure raises his shield to protect his face while he lowers his spear towards the earth. A clever design, the top is made such that a candlestick can be attached by the foundry at the request of the client [and we have seen examples of this amphora with candle wells and candle sticks added, presumably by the foundry at the time of sale]. It also makes the pair an easy target for conversion into table lamps, though fortunately that has not been attempted with the present pair and they remain in their perfectly original state. A positively gorgeous pair with so many useful places - ideally these would have been placed on the fireplace mantel on either side of a great painting or sculptural centerpiece. But they also work beautifully on sideboards, consoles or any other space where some symmetry, texture and great storytelling are a must. Measurements: 12 1/2" H x 5 3/8" D x 6 1/4" W Condition Report: Old restored crack in the marble base of one; rubbing wear and discoloration to patina throughout from gentle handling and time; carefully cleaned and sealed, a fine glowing presentation. Pair of French 19th Century Neoclassical Bronze and Red Marble Lamps
Located in Shippensburg, PA
FINE PAIR OF NEOCLASSICAL ORMOLU-MOUNTED ROUGE MARBLE TABLE LAMPS France, probably Paris, circa third quarter of the 19th century Item # 404LBP26Q A magnificent pair of Neoclassical vases converted into lamps, they are designed loosely after the influential vases of Antiquity known as the Medici and Borhese Vases. Those Kraters were executed in marble and have been widely considered the finest and most well-conceived vases of Antiquity. They have been frequently copied and have been the inspiration for many decorative arts, including the present pair. The original vases feature bas-relief scenes in the Medici vase of a seated Iphigenia beneath a statue of Diana surrounded by Achilles, Ulysses and Agamemnon and in the Borghese vase a scene of drunk Silenius, Dionysus wearing his animal skin garment and Ariadne all together accompanied by a procession of revellers. The present example departs from antiquity, focusing only on the Bacchic revellers and have repeated this motif across the field of the vase. They carry in their outstretched arms wreathes and long drapes of their garments, several carrying in hand the Thrysus. The chorus of figures is loosely reminiscent to the Borghese Dancers, also known as the Dancing Hours, executed in bas relief in marble...

Pair of ‘Neo-Grec’ Style Multipatinated Bronze Amphora Vases
By Ferdinand Barbedienne, Ferdinand Levillain
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A Large And Rare Pair of ‘Neo-Grec’ Style Multipatinated Bronze Amphora Vases by Ferdinand Levillain and Ferdinand Barbedienne. Signed to the cast ‘F. Levillain Fecit 1880’ and ‘F. Barbedienne’. This large pair of multipatinated vases are of amphora form modelled in the ‘Neo-Grec’ style with trumpet shaped necks and scrolling handles terminating in masks; the vases are raised on circular spreading bases put down on plinths. Each vase is finely ornamented with laurel leaves and garlands to the neck, the main body with a superb banded frieze cast in low relief depicting the Centauromachy. In the Centauromachy, the Lapiths battle with the Centaurs at the wedding feast of Pirithous. An enduring classical theme linked with the idea of culture versus nature, the Centauromachy was widely depicted in ancient Greece from the Southern Metopes of the Parthenon Freieze to the Temple of Apollo Epikourious at Bassai, it also appears as a subject on numerous Attic vases such as the Ilioupersis krater. A popular theme for artists from the Renaissance onwards it was depicted by amongst others, Michelangelo, Piero di Cosimo, Luca Signorelli, Sebastiano Ricci...
