Pair Charles X Bronze-Mounted & Carved Alabaster Vases

About the Item

FINE PAIR OF CHARLES X GILT-BRONZE MOUNTED CARVED ALABASTER VASES Circa second quarter of 19th century Item # 311XIP09Q A fabulous pair of Charles X period alabaster vases from the second quarter of the 19th century, they feature brilliant crisply cast ormolu mounts against the oxidized and beautifully patinated alabaster. The neck on each is flanked by scrolled foliate handles raised over carved masks on either side. Centrally hung Bachanalian trophy mounts are framed by draped garlands of flowers while the plinth is mounted with a large centrally situated lyre surrounded by laurel-leaves in a wreath. The vases are carved in the repeating water-leaves around the tapered stem and the plinth features lovely carved molding throughout. Both present beautifully with worn and wonderfully patinated surfaces throughout. Provenance: Formerly with Galerie Steinitz, Paris; offered in the first of three sales performed by Christies, New York on 19 October 2007 for the Parisian antiquarian firm [sale 1887, "Le Goût Steinitz, I", lot no. 15, estimate 10,000-15,000 USD, achieved $ 4375 USD] Measurements: 13 3/16" H x 3 1/4" D x 3 1/4" W [base] Condition Report: They possibly would have had lids originally, though the oxidization around the rims of the vase opening suggest that if this is the case they have been missing for an incredibly long time; old repair to foliate arm on one vase handle (note gray material - this can be colored upon request to reduce distraction of repair); handles slightly loose; both with old restorations, one being more significant and quite old (mostly visible to reverse); one vase with large chip from base; some variation in carvings between each vase, each with heavily worn molding decorations; one mask a very old restoration where it was carved from a composite material and has discolored at a slightly different rate than the other three original masks; other chips, discolorations and blemishes. A very fine presentation. VERY FINE PAIR OF ENGLISH SILVERPLATED COBALT GLASS CHESTNUT URNS Marked for Barker-Ellis of Birmingham, England made circa 1912-1931 with maker's mark to underside [seven-branch menorah], signed "England" and impressed "8" along with silversmith's scratched notations Item # 312DPP11Z An exceedingly fine pair of chestnut or candy urns by the renowned silversmithing firm Barker-Ellis of Birmingham, England, the menorah marker's mark was reportedly used by Barker-Ellis starting in 1912 and continued to be in use by the firm through 1931 [see the Smithsonian Museum of American History, acc. no. 1988.0569.07 for a tray of the same marking and documented dates of use]. The present version of the menorah mark is an earlier version of the marking and probably places the pair of urns to circa 1920. The urns feature a carved pineapple finial with exquisitely chiseled and chased leaves over a coved lid, this lifting off to reveal a spacious interior with removable hand-blown cobalt glass...

  • “Putto on Doe” Art Nouveau Bronze Sculpture by Charles Korschann
    By Charles Korschann
    Located in Shippensburg, PA
CHARLES KORSCHANN Czech, 1872-1943 Putto Riding a Doe Medium-brown patinated bronze over an original marble base Signed "CH. KORRSCHANN." and sealed with foundry cachet for Louchet Item # 301LCJ14L A very fine lifetime casting of Charles Korschann's Putto Riding a Doe, the model is steeped in the elements of the Art Nouveau with a distinct celebration of the naturalistic. The putto grasps a simple harp in his hand while a loose garment bound in a belt encircling his waist billows in the unseen wind. The doe looks on with disinterest, unconcerned about its surroundings and almost at one with its rider. It is a carefully composed idealization of the natural world and the potential for harmony between man and beast. The casting is exquisite, typical of work from Louchet, and is finished in a medium-brown translucent patina. Charles Korschann Born in Brno, Monrovia in 1872 as Charles Korschmann, later dropping the "m" to appear less Germanic, he studied at the fine arts academies of Vienna, Berlin and Paris before finally establishing himself in Paris in 1894. He spent his entire career working in Paris, exhibiting at the 1900 Exposition Universelle where he was awarded a Bronze Medal and from 1894 through 1905 at the Société des Artistes Français. His work is very distinctive and immediately recognizable, a most important trait as an artist and a particular accomplishment in light of the output of his contemporaries. He was to sculpture what Alphonse Mucha was to graphics, both men originating from the same province in Czechoslovakia and having similar influences in Paris. It is rather fitting that he would execute a bust of Alphonse Mucha for the Museum of Brno in honor of his accomplishments. Artist Listings...

    Located in Wormelow, Herefordshire
An exquisitely carved Italian antique alabaster centrepiece vase or urn circa 1860. The detail of this beautiful urn offers a glimpse into the styles of 19th century Italy, the body finely carved with masks and foliage to either side between entwined handles reminiscent of the famous Warwick Vase. It stands on an equally as decorative socle base carved with leaves and an egg and dart trim. With its smooth and somewhat translucent appearance, this antique alabaster vase...
