Charles Catteau Art Deco Ceramic Vase, Circa 1920

About the Item

A superb ceramic vase crafted by Charles Catteau (1880-1966), for Boch Freres, Belgium, early 20th Century. In 1906, Catteau moved to La Louvière, Belgium, to work as a designer at Boch Frères Keramis. This company dominated the Belgian ceramics market in the late 19th century, but it would see particular success in the first half of the 20th century with the arrival of Catteau, whose developments of form, technique and decoration transformed ceramics into an iconic class of Art Deco wares. For Catteau, the influence of Asian art was possibly the most profound. This can be observed in elements like his use of vibrant, pure colors and forms, his careful application of decoration and the crackled texture of many of his glazes. In addition to Japanese art, some of Catteau’s vases reflect a primitivism often found in African art. This vase is one example. Showing concentric semi-circles from top to bottom in earthy colors, with a thick top showing the crackled texture of the glaze, it's a departure from more traditional Catteau designs, which include flowers and animals. Signed at the bottom by the artist and engraved with a number and the words "Gres Keramis". This is the type of signature most desired by collectors. 7 inches in diameter, 12 inches high.

Thai Ceramic Vase, Mid 19th Century
Located in New York, NY
A ceramic vase from Thailand, with light cream glaze and painted floral decorations. Late 19th Century. While the golden age of Thai ceramics ended around the 15-16th Centuries, Thai craftsmen learned the art through generations, later producing smaller numbers of pieces with different clays and glazing techniques, inspired by the original master artisans of places like Si-Satchanalai and Sawankhalok. This small vase is beautifully preserved, measuring approximately 5 inches in diameter and 9.5 inches high. Its light beige glaze and still visible painted decorations is reminiscent of the impeccable craft of the ancient Southeast Asian ceramics.
