English Minton Japonisme Aesthetic Movement Majolica Aubergine Eggplant Vase

About the Item

From Minton, a wonderful and extremely scarce majolica glazed Aubergine eggplant vase, dated 1875. An example of the Japonisme Aesthetic so desirable in the mid-19th century. Glazed in an incredible purple-brown called Aubergine, the gourd shaped body is cradled on a deep green conical fluted scallop shell base with stylized coral branches and sea plant leaves. The interior shows the same rich green glazing as the base. Pattern number ‘1391’. Marked Mintons, with the date code of 1875, and with the impressed mold number 1391. 6.5 in. diameter at the widest point x 8.5 in. height. A top opening of 3 inches. This vase must have been lovingly cared for, the condition is incredible.

Attributed to Minton pottery in Staffordshire, England, a scarce sized set of majolica glazed pitchers in the Palissy style, circa 1870s. The Aesthetic Period pitchers are molded with a raised nut vine pattern with leaves in light and dark green, and closed buds. The vine handle is ‘held’ in place with green shoots, the tight buds are glazed in cream encased in light spring green leaves. The body is finished in an iridescent brown, the interior in a beautiful turquoise. A turquoise glazed underside.
