Ercole Barovier “Crepuscolo” Murano Vase for Ferro-Toso Barovier, 1935-36

About the Item

Ercole Barovier (Italian, 1889-1974) “Crepuscolo Vase for Ferro-Toso Barovier, 1935-36. Ercole Barovier comes from one of the most respectable families of glassmakers that specialized in Venetian glass since 1291. Although he never received formal training as a glassblower, his designs in glass art have become some of the greatest masterpieces of all time in the fine art of Venetian glassmaking. Today, Barovier is considered a pivotal figure in Murano glassmaking, having created over 25,000 unique and highly creative designs leaving behind a legacy that will endure till eternity. Ferro Toso Barovier was an Italian glassmaking company that came about as a result of the merger of the two most prominent Murano glassmaking familes - Barovier and Ferro Toso. The Toso family had been established in Murano since around 1350. Today, the same company is called Barovier-Toso. The “Crepuscolo” vase, created in 1935-36, showcased Barovier’s exceptional genius and remarkable creativity. The technique involved in the making of this vase involved inserting iron wool between two layers of molten glass giving the vase a mysterious “smoky” quality. No one had done this before he did. The result was a masterpiece. The vase has applied clear glass prunts on each side and has inclusions throughout. It is in excellent condition. DIMENSIONS: Height: 11.75 in (29.8 cm.) Width: 8.25 in.
