About the Item

Extraordinary large Japanese contemporary decorative porcelain vase/centerpiece, extremely intricately hand painted on a tall stunning cylinder shape porcelain body in red, pink, blue and green, a signed masterpiece by highly acclaimed award-winning master porcelain artist of the Imari-Arita region of Japan (1931-2009). This exceptional vase was part of a collection of his lifelong works that was carefully preserved in his kiln and was recently released by his two sons who continue to manage his kiln. The artist was admired for his extremely intricate depiction of scenes of nature and intricate geometric patterns. The artist's legacy lives on through his two sons, acclaimed porcelain artists in their own right, each of whom specializes in one aspect of their father’s style. He was the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his exceptional work and unique contributions to the centuries old art. This artist's profile is available upon request. An itriguing piece showcasing two scenes from the life of a noble lady and her retainers. One scene shows her in formal processional attire and parasol, while the other follows her to a cherry blossom viewing outing on the banks of a swift-flowing river. In the latter scene, the noble lady stands on a meticulously expressed cedar-plank platform overlooking the river and is surrounded by a richly decorated curtain installed to preserve her privacy. The artist adds a humorous touch by placing a cat near her feet, and a more somber note by showing that one of the female retainers carries a sword for her protection. The two scenes are separated by vertical panels decorated with the artist's signature hexagon pattern. Each hexagon encapsulates a five-petalled cherry blossom done in soft hues of yellow and green, and is placed upon a striking dark blue background. The same hexagon pattern appears on the base, as well as the inner and outer surfaces of the rim to neatly frame the entire piece. This striking piece is a great example of the artist's mastery in both underglaze and polychrome overglaze enameling. The sheer size, the breathtaking intricate scenes decorating the two sides and the elegant shape of this magnificent vase that create a mesmerizing contrast, make this a remarkable focal point that attracts people to get closer to enjoy the details of this mesmerizing piece. This exceptional porcelain vase comes in the original wooden case (tomobako) signed by the artist. Dimensions: H 16 in, D 9 in.
