After World War II, the territory known as West Germany experienced a resurgence in the arts, including ceramics. Potters adopted simple, functional styles in response to postwar scarcity of resources. German ceramics of this period were characterized by geometric shapes, smooth surfaces and sober colors. These practical, minimalist designs marked a turning point from previous trends, influencing later movements like Scandinavian design. Postwar german ceramics thus played an important role in the evolution of modern design.
As an example of this trend, we can point the following item: a bulky, urn-shaped vase made entirely of glazed, painted ceramic, decorated with linear, geometric and colorful patterns on a pale orange body. The vase is devoid of handles and has an opening at the top. Underneath, on the base, a stamped seal can be found demonstrating the place of origin.
