“A Robineau vase is a true work of art, unique in conception and perfect in execution, for every piece that left this studio was a labor of love.” – Ethel Brand Wise, The American Magazine of Art, 1929
Adelaide Alsop Robineau was a pioneer in American studio ceramics and excelled as an innovator in pottery both technically and aesthetically. As a young woman of high society in the late Victorian era, she gained early accolades as a skilled watercolorist and china painter and taught for a time at St. Mary’s Hall in Minnesota. In 1899, she married Samuel E. Robineau, a French gentleman and collector of Chinese ceramics. He was deeply intrigued by her talent and steadfastly supported and encouraged her throughout her career. The couple collaborated to produce a popular and influential monthly journal together, Keramic Studio, and went on to build a studio on their property in Syracuse, New York, which they named Four Winds. Robineau would also go on to teach for many years at Syracuse University while creating her own work and raising three children.
Early in her career, she studied at Alfred University under Charles Binns, who is widely considered to be the progenitor of contemporary studio ceramics in America. His program established a shift in the craft of ceramics as an academic pursuit, rather than one of apprenticeship. Pottery throwers and the artists who decorated the wares traditionally inhabited separate roles in ceramic manufacture, a practice common in Europe. Binns’ philosophy merged the two, such that the potter had total agency of the final product. This marked a historic divergence in the creation of art pottery – one that Adelaide Robineau...

Art Nouveau Table Lamp 'Vignes Et Escargots', Daum Nancy, France, Circa 1905
By Daum
Located in Vienna, AT
A museum piece of French Art Nouveau glass art:
Lamp with baluster-shaped foot on a stepped, flat, round stand raised in the centre, hemispherical shade, slightly heat-stretched and pressed upwards on four sides, made of multi-layered glass with coloured powder fusions, predominantly in yellow-orange, red, brown, green and blue-violet tones, with highly etched vine leaves and grapevine decoration, two fully sculpted snails on the foot as a special accent, Cameo signature ‘DAUM NANCY’ with Lorraine cross on the foot in the lower area, and on the shade, which rests on a patinated metal mount, which also carries the threads for the light sources, one at the top and one inside the foot.
Technique: Handmade cameo glass
Glass overlaid with several layers, with high-cut worked out motifs. Since the middle of the 19th century, the design has also been done by etching. Cameo glass vessels were already being made in antiquity; cameo glass vessels were already being made in ancient times, and at the end of the 19th century this glass art was further developed,
especially in Nancy.
Manufactory: Daum Frères / Nancy, Lorraine, France
Dating: Circa 1905
Dimensions:
Height: 53,5 cm / 21.06 in
Diameter: 32,0 cm / 12.59 in
Bibliography:
Carolus Hartmann, Glasmarken-Lexikon / Encyclopedia of Glass Marks, Stuttgart / Germany 1997, Signature number 2984 on page 148, and page 561: Daum Frères & Cie, Verreries de Nancy
Condition: Very good
The electrification is functional, but should be renewed for safety reasons.
About the design:
The development of Art Nouveau glass art coincides with a revolution in lighting, the significance of which we can no longer fully appreciate today in the 21st century. Around 1880-1890, oil lamps and paraffin lamps were still almost unrivalled in every household. It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that the ‘electricity fairy’ emerged as a remarkable advance and gradually found its way into the daily lives of all social classes. The glassmakers at the Ecole de Nancy were true pioneers and eagerly seized the opportunity to use electricity to illuminate the colours
applied to the glass. Colour was one of the main concerns of the master glassmakers at the Ecole de Nancy.
Emile and Antonin Daum returned to the colours that had made the stained glass of the Middle Ages so splendid and extended the palette of colours in the glass mass as they needed it for the floral motifs and exact representations of nature. But the modulation of the colours, their arrangement in juxtaposed patches, the technique that the Impressionist painters practised on their canvases at the same time, was difficult to achieve due
to the nature of the glass melted in a large mass.
To achieve this richness of expression, around 1900 Daum developed ‘the process of applying glass powder and enamel to the outside of the vases to create coloured backgrounds or decorative spots’, according to the report of the jury of the 1900 World Exhibition.
The field of naturalistic, contrasting and shimmering colours was one in which Antonin Daum excelled. This new technical process made it possible to create the symphonies of colour that we find on the ‘Vignes et escargots’ lamp...

Louis Comfort Tiffany Gold Favrile Art Glass Floriform Pedestal Vase
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This elegant iridescent gold Favrile art glass vase was made by Tiffany Studios operating under the direction of Louis Comfort Tiffany. Tiffany Favrile Glass was first offered to the public in 1893 and this hand-blown piece dates to the mid-to-late 1920s. The vase has a warm golden glow and was crafted with a wide domed pedestal base that gives way to a ribbed body. The body flares slightly as it rises and transitions dramatically to a wide shallow neck that terminates in a scalloped-edge rim. As seen in the accompanying photographs, the well-balanced piece is nicely proportioned and displays beautifully.
The vase stands 8.375" as measured to its tallest point and is 3.75" across the rim. The foot is 4" from edge to edge. The piece is free of chips and cracks and is presented in original condition with no restoration or repair. The underside bears a typical Tiffany Studios late production compound number signature reading L. C. Tiffany Inc. - Favrile and includes shape number 1548 followed by serial number 3164 N.

Fine Japanese Ceramic Vase Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese long neck porcelain vase circa 1900-1910s by the studio of Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected Japanese ceramist from the end of Meiji Period. Commonly known as Makuzu Kozan, which also appears as the signature on his work, his originally birth name was Miyagawa Toranosuke. He was the appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household and his work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century.
This vase features an elegant Classic form with a slender neck and slightly flared mouth above a baluster body. It was finely painted with two swimming carps in a copper red underglaze among green ribbons like waves. The background display a brilliant verdant green overall, Around the fish a poetic hazy effect was emphasized for a visual complexity by Fuki-e (the blow painting), an invention in Kozan's studio. The new technical development of chemical colors from the west was embraced circa 1900s in Kozan studio. This empowered the more creative experiments with not only colors, but also concept of dimension, which led Makuzu Kozan's work to become a bridge between East and West aesthetics. This is particularly evident in this vase with the Masterly details of the brush strokes, the expertly employment of gradient of color, and a very realistic and detailed rendering of the fish and their vivid motions.
For two similar examples of Kozan's work with similar carps decoration, see Page 148-149 of the book: Sekai ni Aisa Reta ya Kimono Miyagawa Kozan Makuzu...
