Swedish Ceramic Vase in Blue Hare’s Fur Glaze by Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg

About the Item

This is the 1953 Berndt Friberg vase in mint condition from Gustavsberg. It comes in a beautiful hare’s fur glaze in a shade of blue that changes depending on from what direction the light falls in to the room, also whether the room is lit or dim. The color thus shifts from a clear Mediterranean blue to a slightly, darker ashes gray shade above the blue. The last picture is taken in the same, but different part of room. There it is on a white surface instead of mahogany. The shape is in form of a slim egg and the vase stands on a round foot with a matt glazed base. It has been marked; G for Gustavsberg, Friberg, the symbol The Studio Hand and the letter X, at the bottom of the pottery before the burning. The letter X is Gustavsberg's marking for manufacture in 1953. ____________________ The ceramist and turner Berndt Friberg was born in 1899 in Höganäs, a town in southern Sweden where ceramics meant a lot for more than a century. As a young man, he started working as a handyman at Höganäsbolaget. It was a short stay. He moved around and worked at Møller & Bøgely in Denmark and later at Raus Stenkärlsfabrik in Helsingborg. In 1934, he came to the Gustavsberg porcelain factory, where he worked until he passed away in 1981 in the age of 82. Berndt friberg made himself world famous thanks to the elegance of his works and an unsurpassed level of craftsmanship. During his long and successful career he designed countless things and received many awards. In 1947, 1951 and 1954 he was awarded the gold medal in the Milano Trienal, to name a few.
