About the Item

Rare ashtray/pocket emptier produced by Fontana Arte in the 1960s, thick beveled glass, Nile green color. Decorative element that can be used as a pocket emptier or ashtray, excellent condition. Fontana Arte is an Italian company founded in Milan, Italy in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti and specializes in glass processing and the manufacture of furniture accessories. It is known for working with curved crystal and producing lighting fixtures, becoming a prominent name in Italian design over the years. In 1930 a collaboration began between Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti, then art director at Richard Ginori. Ponti, in 1931, was called to the artistic direction of the company and designed several lamps for Fontana, including the 0024 and the Bilia. With the increase in demand for artistic crystal products, a sector where the Italian company was increasingly expanding thanks to the artistic partnership between the two Milanese creatives, in 1933 Ponti and Fontana founded Fontana Arte, a full-fledged corporate division specializing in the creation of artistic crystal elements. From here on, first Pietro Chiesa and then Max Ingrand would create authentic masterpieces, making Fontana Arte the 'most important glass company in the world. For this and other iconic Italian design objects follow our SECOND YOUTH gallery, we offer restoration services and custom research.
