Dated 1877, this Victorian charger features intricate repoussé detailing in high relief, depicting a classical scene, titled 'The Pompeian Lady', inspired by ancient Roman mythology. The charger is signed and dated Morel-Ladeuil inv.e.fecit 1876 to the front, with the reverse marked with a registration lozenge and a further Elkington mark, and inscribed 'REGISTRIRT IN DEN OESTERREICHISCHEN KAISERSTATEN, ZAHL 10 297, REGISTRIRT IM DEUTSCHEN REICH NO.27, BD.I.BL 114, and DEPOSE EN FRANCE DESIGN COPYRIGHTED IN THE UNITED STATES NOV IX, 76.
Versions of this plaque also form part of the collections of The National Museum of Scotland, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Art, and The New Orleans Museum of Art.

Léonard Morel-Ladeuil
Léonard Morel-Ladeuil is known to have created only 35 masterworks during his professional career. The most successful and accomplished gold and silver designers of the 19th century were French and Ladeuil, in particular, was regarded as the greatest living practitioner of his craft. He was trained by the famed French silversmith Antoine Vechte, from whom he learned the art of repoussé that is so eloquently showcased in these salvers. Ladeuil began working for Elkington in 1859, very soon after he gained his freedom from apprenticeship. The firm's primary objective for the gifted artisan was utilizing his talents to create grand, intricate works to be displayed at exhibitions and for only the most important special commissions.
