This exquisite silver plated wall charger is a stunning example of 19th-century decorative art, designed by renowned French sculptor Léonard Morel-Ladeuil in 1876 for the esteemed English firm of Elkington & Co. and first exhibited at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition.
Dated 1877, this Victorian charger features intricate repoussé detailing in high relief, depicting a classical scene, titled 'The Pompeian Lady', inspired by ancient Roman mythology. The craftsmanship showcases the height of Elkington’s electroplating innovation and Morel-Ladeuil’s mastery of neoclassical design.

This impressive charger measures 20"(51cm) in diameter.
The charger is signed and dated Morel-Ladeuil inv.e.fecit 1876 to the front, with the reverse marked with a registration lozenge and a further Elkington mark, and inscribed 'REGISTRIRT IN DEN OESTERREICHISCHEN KAISERSTATEN, ZAHL 10 297, REGISTRIRT IM DEUTSCHEN REICH NO.27, BD.I.BL 114, and DEPOSE EN FRANCE DESIGN COPYRIGHTED IN THE UNITED STATES NOV IX, 76.
Versions of this plaque also form part of the collections of The National Museum of Scotland, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Carnegie Museum of Art, and The New Orleans Museum of Art.

Crafted in parcel-gilt and electroplated silver, this stunning epergnes suite was made by the leading English firm Elkington & Co. in late Victorian London. The pieces are crafted in a magnificent Egyptian Revival style, most evident from the stunning sphinx mounts on the main pieces. The suite is comprised of a pair of large oval shaped epergnes that consist of leaf mounts, pierced and mounted with pairs of sphinxes that support cut-glass bowls.
