About the Item

Jean Cocteau (French 1889-1963) Amazingly talented, Jean Cocteau was a visual artist, poet, playwright, film director, and designer. He was one of the foremost avant-garde artists of the 20th century and influential in the surrealist and Dadaist movements. In 1957, Cocteau began working closely with the ceramicists Marie‑Madeleine Jolly (1914–1963) and Philippe Madeline. An enduring friendship grew from their shared artistic exploration at their studio, Atelier Madeline‑Jolly. Cocteau worked with her atelier to create jewelry and ceramics. During the 1950s and early 1960s, Cocteau created over 300 ceramic artworks including plates, vases, tiles, and jewelry. Cocteau would make drawings which were then transferred to the earthenware, resulting in unique signed editions. Cocteau produced over 300 ceramic pieces — plates, vases, tiles and even ceramic jewelry. The process involved Cocteau’s freehand drawings being transferred to earthenware, resulting in unique signed editions.
