"Fishermen, " Rare Midcentury Plate with Fishermen by Società Anonima Marina

About the Item

Colorful and jazzy, this extremely rare plate depicting wasp-waisted fisherman on the coast of Italy was produced by artisans at the Società Anonima Marina (SAM) in the Republic of San Marino. Founded by Aldo Busignani and Omero Nocentini in 1956, and directed by Luigi Guarino, the pottery produced a range of Mid-Century wares, but this theme is highly unusual. The vivid glazes are characteristic of Italian pottery, and the expressionistic figures are reminiscent of the work of Marc Bellaire in America.
