"Bathers in the Marsh, " Mid Century Dish with Male Nudes Along Laguna Coast
About the Item
An especially rare example of Pat and Covey Stewart's ceramic work in Laguna Beach, California, this dish depicts a group of three nude male figures bathing in a marshy area along the California coast. Here, Pat Stewart used a squeeze bag technique to add depth to the scene, creating tangles of grasses and weeds to suggest the marshy environment. The glazes are in tones of charcoal and pale green, almost suggesting a twilight hour for the scene. Pat Stewart created a line of ceramic ware with his wife Covey in 1951 and 1952. They exhibited at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts and sold their ceramic wares to high-end gift shops and hotel shops across the nation. Pat Stewart, who did the decorating and glazing of "Bathers" pieces, liked to depict nude male figures along the rocky coast where they lived.
