"Bathing in Laguna at Midnight", Rare Mid Century Ceramic Box w/ Male Nudes
About the Item
A rare and atmospheric example of Pat and Covey Stewart's "Bathers" series of ceramic pieces, this box depicts four male nude figures -- two on the lid and two in the interior -- bathing along the rocky shore of Laguna Beach. Pat Stewart created a line of ceramic ware with his wife Covey in 1951 and 1952, exhibiting at the Laguna Beach Festival of the Arts and selling their ceramic wares to high-end gift shops and hotel shops across the nation. Pat, who did the decorating and glazing of "Bathers" pieces, liked to depict nude male figures along the rocky coast where they lived. Most Bathers pieces are in pale shades of grey and green, so this example with a jet-black background is more unusual. The bottom is boldly signed, as is the lid.
