"Reclining Male Nude, " Antique Hinged Box with Inset Drawing by Gaston Goor

About the Item

Created at the height of the Art Deco period, in 1940s France, but clearly inspired by the monumental male nudes of Michelangelo and the high Renaissance in Italy, this 1942 drawing of a reclining male nude was drawn by Gaston Goor and incorporated into an antique box with a glass and wood lid. Goor was a great admirer of the great Classical and Renaissance masters, and here his figures are masterfully drafted, showing the influence of the lithe Mannerism of the late Renaissance. The artist illustrated a number of books by Roger Peyrefitte and others which had an implicit, or sometimes explicit, homoerotic theme. Goor also designed vases for the famous Sevres porcelain works, as well as for the Mougin pottery company in France. The drawing is pencil on paper; the box is finished with a design in low relief, given an antiqued gold and deep red finish.
