About the Item
A beautiful French Empire style porcelain cartographic cabinet plate made circa 1825 featuring a map of North America highlighted with an apple-green and gilt border with neoclassical motifs.
This cabinet plate, possibly a Paris porcelain or a Sevres blank, is inscribed "Amerique Septentrionale'' and depicts a map of North America published in Chevalier de Roujoux Vosgien’s 1823 Atlas Geographique. It shows the United States after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The back of this dish has the original paper label of a 19th-century retailer, which provides a fascinating opportunity to study decorative arts marketing history as well as a clue to the object’s original provenance.
