Marc Bellaire Balinese Ceramic Covered Dish California ca 1950s. This is a fabulous and colorful hand-painted designed ceramic dish that could be used on a dresser to store trinkets and such or just to provide that mid-century modern decorative touch to any interior.
Measures 2 inches high, 8 1/8 inches wide, 5 inches deep.
Marc Bellaire was born in 1925 in Toledo, Ohio. He studied at the Toledo Museum of Art while employed at the Libby Glass Company. Bellaire moved to California in the early 1950s and opened a studio in Culver City. Bellaire produced high-quality ceramics, often decorated with ultramodern figures and geometric patterns. His most famous line was Mardi Gras, featuring slim dancers in spattered and striped colors. Other popular lines were Jamaica, Balinese, Beachcomber, Friendly Island, Hawaiian, Bird Isle and Kashmir. Marc Bellaire was quite prolific during the 1950s and was named one of the top ten artware designers by Giftware Magazine. Bellaire relocated to Marin County in the 1970s and later moved to Palm Springs where he opened his final studio and gallery. He died in 1994. Early in his career, Bellaire worked at Sascha Brastoff's factory and was his protege. The two are often associated together, although Bellaire's work is unique and distinctive.

Signed Littlejohn 472 on base.
There is one pinprick glaze nick or skip, possibly from production. This bowl is highly carved so it's very difficult to see or notice. One "tooth" on the edge may have an older repair, it's difficult to tell but we've added several images and priced accordingly. See photos for details.
