About the Item

French ceramic decorative dish with thistle motif (c. 1960s) by Albert Thiry. Boat-shaped ceramic dish with milky-white glazed exterior. Within the dish you find the same base glaze mixed with thistle motif in blue and green. The lip of the dish is white with repeating incised branches and leaves. Very stylish and of the era. Signed on the bottom: 'Thiry'. In good overall condition. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
