Mid-Century Modern French Ceramic Platter by Albert Thiry, 1960s, era Blin

About the Item

Mid-Century Modern French Ceramic Platter by Albert Thiry, 1960s, era Blin One beautiful glazed ceramic platter with an engraved and hand-painted blue thistle flower bud. We find the vocabulary of preference of the ceramist: a chalky white background, both bright and neutral to highlight the blue flower and foliage, the edge is also engraved with decorative motifs. In very good condition. Signed under the base. Circa 1960. ----------- Albert Thiry (1923-2009) Ceramist from Nice, he studied at the School of Decorative Arts in the city. He settled with his wife Pyot Gavaudan in 1943 in the pottery village of Vallauris. There he continued his training as a ceramist in various workshops, notably that of Charles Voltz (1923-1997). In 1956, he joined Claire and René Batigne as a decorator, who had run the Tapis Vert workshop since 1950. There he rubbed shoulders with Marcel Vertès and Anton Prinner who introduced him to sculpture. He set up on his own in 1962, joined by his wife, Pyot Gavaudan, who had been a designer and decorator at the Giraud workshop since 1956. Together they then produced two types of productions: one related to the decorative arts (tableware and lighting) and the other solely sculptural (dreamlike characters and animals). They perfected a technique of intaglio engraving and decoration in chamotte clay. From 1966 to 1974, Albert Thiry participated in the Biennales de Vallauris and received the honorary diploma in 1971.

French ceramic lamp Mid-Century Modern by Albert Thiry, 1960s, era Blin One beautiful glazed ceramic bedside lamp with an engraved and hand-painted flower decor. It is a very beautiful work of glaze, soft and silky, all in delicacy. The dark clay is covered with a glaze in the white-chalk and green-water tones loved by the ceramist. The flower motifs are engraved leaving the clay visible under the clear glaze. Ochre-red tones come to warm up the whole. In very good condition.
