About the Item

English Delftware Blue & White Sauce Boat, London, Circa 1790 The English blue and white delftware silver-form sauce boat, with long curved spout and a crabstock handle, is decorated with a Chinoiserie design of buildings and landscapes has a rococo shape with a shell-edge interior border. The interior with a flower sprig. John Austin (see below) wrote about the smaller example at Williamsburg that the shape comes in two sizes. One large size lik this example are unusually painted with a European landscape and a smaller size with a chinoiserie design like this one. The attribution to London was made on the basis of the color of the blue and a similar example is illustrated in London Delftware by Frank Britton Dimensions: 4 3/4 inches high x 8 1/2 inches wide x 3 1/2 inches deep (12.07cm high x 21.59cm wide x 8.89cm deep).
